US Air Force Suspends Cyberspace Command Operations
Friday, August 15th, 2008 - 4:05pm
Looks like the Air Force has suspended operations of the new Cyberspace Command and is trying to figure out what to do with it. I'll bet the backstory on this is just fascinating, but I don't know it.
These guys even had cool tv ads and everything...
"Sometimes I go around saying, 'Kommisar Paulson has seized the commanding heights of the economy!'" - Paul Krugman, asked if recent changes to banking are socialistic.

Hmm. As a sign at the Navy wing in the Pentagon building alledgedly says, "never forget our biggest enemy: US Air Force"... After reading this article, it looks to me that Air Force's biggest enemy is Air Force too..

Those ads worked. I even looked into Cyberspace Command. Was interested in finding out about the jobs they have.

OG_Slinger, I was really close to posting that picture to go with my post. Come on, I could be saving people and I would be from the internet.

They were supposed to be building some of this down here at Barksdale. My grandfather is retired Air Force and has been trying to bend my ear to get me to go apply (for employment, not enlistment). Does this just sweep everything off the table?

You're in payback mode for all the creepy spider pictures, aren't you?

So...does this keep judgement day from happening? Or is skynet still going to become self aware?

The system as it stood was flawed (as most USAF programs tend to be) and had a name so stupid no one could take it seriously (as some USAF programs tend to have), but I hope they replace it with something better. It was remarkably progressive of the Pentagon to start taking the threat seriously and we're going to be in trouble if they give up on that.
Our armed forces are relying more and more on computers (the buzzword for the last few years has been 'net-centric') and if we continue to increase the capability gap between our guys and "their" guys, there's really only one reasonable conclusion.

Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.
Just letting you guys know to start stock piling your weapons!

Will Skynet take away our 2nd Amendment right to own a phased plasma rifle with a 40-watt range?
Hey, just what ya see, pal.

Better hurry. It happened 11 years ago.
I am often mystified by the motivations behind movie characters that KNOW that a 9mm will do nothing to a terminator/vampire/monster and yet continue to shoot it anyway. Wouldn't it be a far more rational course of action to ambush it with something likely to actually make a difference (e.g.: .50bmg, large electromagnet, 155mm artillery round...)?

What, you guys don't have those things?

I think Paleo doesn't really have a full grasp on the gamut tactical constraints and operational issues that people encounter in a typical zombie/vampire/cyborg standoff.

Zombies are a tactical cakewalk. Anything that lacks the sophistication of the common rodent can be dealt with using the judicious application of very basic technology.

What about volcanoes?

Boulders.
Both as a solution to Lobster's query and as an addition adversary that could not be handled with basic technology.

One word: virgin.
I find that an automobile works pretty well when it comes to volcanoes. Drive out of the area at the first sign of seismic activity. Trust me, the volcano won't chase you.

But what if the volcano did chase you? Why hasn't anybody made this into a horror movie yet?

The volcano won't, but the pyroclastic wave might...

See: Dante's Peak, or, Volcano.
Both of those movies had scenes of people being chased. Dante's by the after math of the volcano. Volcano, by the volcano itself.

And don't forget the BBC's immortal "Supervolcano". It's better than Dante's Peak, or Volcano, because it was a two-parter.
