Couldn't find a thread for this game that's getting some good reviews. I'm suddenly tempted to buy the Madden Collector's edition just to get this early.

Yep. It looks very promising. But since it will be out in September, I will be waiting until then. No way am I spending $90 to get Head Coach, when Madden looks as typically bad as usual. the big bummer for me is the lack of online leagues for Head Coach. This game is SCREAMING for an online league. Simple head to head is such a waste in a game that is built for fine tuning a franchise and building a winner.

EA is such a pain in my ass.

Yeah. I spent some time with Madden tonight, the demo. It's awful. It's depressing that on a whim we can get almost 30 people to play in a Madden league, but Season 3 of the 2k league is limping along.

All because the clothing isn't authentic.

To be fair, it is summer, and none of those 30 people has played a down in Madden!

Oh, and the clothing is highly calculated by marketing gurus to elicit this sort of response.

Yeah, I am still thinking Season IV will go much better, since the NFL is now kicking into gear.

If you take what Bill Harris was talking about in that article DS linked to in the other thread, I have hard time understanding why Madden still draws in so many fans. It doesn't look like what you see on TV. Grump is right. It's quick, but it the play does not look like the NFL. One of the things 2K gets right is "heft". When you run it up the gut, if feels like a big back has some push, while a smaller back gets pushed around. In the last few EA football games, it feels like you have a light game piece you are moving around, until a collision triggers an animation that doesn't represent what was actually going on in the play.

Because of this, I am really only interested in Madden as a sim game, if the ever got the stats right, which have never even approached realistic. So Head Coach might fill that void. I am still skeptical, however, as I have never played a dynasty type game that had an overall AI that made the single player game compelling to me. It was online league play, against humans that made the game shine. From that view, it looks like Head Coach may still be a way until next year game for me. But I can see spending some time with it to really get inside what makes the game tick, and be ready for a future with online league play.

See, I *want* to like this game so much, and the concept is great. But the choppiness/slowdowns are driving me crazy.

Arise!

Picked this up today, and while there are a lot of warts, i'm starting to fall in love. It's almost sad and at the same time hilarious, because most of the warts this game suffers from (to me) can be pinned right on the Madden '08 engine that powers the in-game action. For instance, coverage, and running the ball are still underpowered and wonky, but the whole package, especially the off-the-field stuff is just golden.

I'll put it like this. So far, for me, this game seems like one I could ignore the flaws of and still have fun with. Which is all I really ask of sports games, that the good outweigh the bad.
