This category 2 is hitting the southern tip of Texas right now. I believe the Austin GWJers will be alright, but does anyone know of others that are further South? Texas GWJers please check in!

In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx

Austin and Houston should both get some much-needed rain. We have a couple in San Antonio (Pigpen at least) that may get some street flooding but it shouldn't be anything catastrophic. I know of no GWJ'ers south of San Antonio.

No one is any trouble down here unless they live in Port Arthur, South Padre or Brownsville. I don't know if we have any members in those areas.

Funny thing is I was kind of thinking the same thing. Having gone through two hurricanes when I lived in Hawaii I know what a Cat 2 and a Cat 3 are like in the islands. It's got to be worse than similar hurricanes on a big land mass. However you do have different dynamics such as flooding inland to worry about that you don't have to worry about on a island as much. Nothing to shake a stick at but honestly I've seen Texas thunderstorms that are about as bad as a Cat 1 Hurricane in my time.

I'm just jaded. I've done quite a few hurricanes both in mainland South Florida and Puerto Rico.

Just to toss this completely into P&C , I just read that John McCain had a planned dramatic appearance on a Gulf of Mexico oil rig yesterday in order to showcase his major policy difference with Obama regarding the importance of giving oil companies offshore leases. Unfortunately for him, it was cancelled by hurricane force winds and a diesel tanker crashing into the French Quarter resulting in a 17 mile spill.

Precious.

Maybe we should ask Pat Robertson if that's God's punishment for gays in the military.

There is only an up or down--up to a man's age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order--or down to the ant heap totalitarianism,... those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

Yeah, I'm on the Northwest side of Houston, so storm surge and winds usually aren't a huge threat. It's the tornadoes that can get spun off, the loss of power for days and the flooding because we have a circa 1960 storm drainage system that cause a lot of problems. Coastal areas of Texas, and about half of the state is flat with a lot of clay in the ground. Not much absorption, so you get a lot of runoff. Good times.

Hurricanes and gays in the military are God's punishment for Pat Roberts. It's a wonder the man sleeps at all.

Not even GWJ is immune to misinformation. A downriver tanker split a barge carrying barrels of fuel oil in two. It's a mess but nothing crashed "into the French Quarter". That was 1996.

Cat 2 is no big deal hitting Texas most of the time. We're on the west side of the Gulf and the water temperatures are normally too cool to support a big storm so they generally blow out pretty quick and just create rain.

I'm in Austin like Grumpy and loving the rain bands we're getting!
woo hoo its not 100 out.

I don't mind the storm this being my first hurricane and all (well I guess it is hitting the southern most tip of Texas)

Funny thing is the power just cut out and then back in! Thank goodness for backup generators.

The real Hurricanes will hit texas AFTER I get my house so I can crap my pants.

Yeah, that's when any 40+ MPH winds, hail or any other nasty weather start making you think about your roof. Believe me, the abrupt change in the way your mind works is startling.

Rita hit texas 3 days before my closing. Even though we're in Austin, the original paths showed it being strong well into land. Even though I knew it would just be at most strong rain, and I wasn't the owner yet, I still stressed.

Not a hurricane (we don't get too many of those in Atlanta) but a tornado hit the subdivision holding my first house 6 days after I closed on it. Put two trees through the roof, shattered several windows and tore a bay window off the back of the bedroom. Fortunately we hadn't moved in yet.

Damned be the hurricanes, it's this freaking humidity from the storm that is pissing me off.
