July 21 - 25

I hope you've got some reading you've been meaning to catch up on, because this is not the week to be breaking the bank on your gaming addiction. Without so much as a middling movie tie-in release on the slumbering 360 and PS3, apparently worn out from a long week of announcing not much interesting at E3, only the DS offers up anything of interest.

But fear not, for August brings with it the beginning of the game buying season, and with it week after week of budget stretching releases. This, my friends, is the proverbial quiet before the storm. Breathe deep, save some money, because this will be among the last of the desolate The Week Ahead of 2008.

Oh, and as for Game of the Week? Uh, Final Fantasy IV. Sure, that's sounds good.

I actually heard FFIV was pretty good in this incarnation.

Well, indeed that's a pennysaving week.

But you know ... I keep visiting my local gamestores anyways because of pricedrops. So many games I don't buy when they come out but don't even think twice before grabbing when they hit the sweet 30$ range (Boom Blox comes to mind immediately).

So I may buy a game anyways.

I'll be taking my copy of Final Fantasy IV now thankyouverymuch.

The original was dumbed down and too damn easy as a result. This version keeps the normal difficulty intact and I personally can't wait to die repeatedly.

I'm interested in FFIV myself, but I'l save it for a rainy-day present to my roomie.

He's bought that damned game so many times. On the SNES, in the PS FF Anthology collection, for the GBA. It's like his version of the White Album.
At least this one will be a graphical overhaul.

Atlus has been sending me all these tawdry emails about Izuna 2. Apparently, unemployed ninjas can't afford to buy clothes that cover their most vulnerable ninja parts.

I'm not complaining, just sayin'.

I would buy FF4, but I'm in the middle of Crisis Core at the moment. And I have yet to finish the DS incarnation of 3.

Ah, Final Fantasy IV. The original was my first RPG, and it made me cry! I am really looking forward to doubling over and sobbing into my DS while waiting for them to board the plane.

In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx

FFIV looks to be awesome. I cannot wait to play it. I still haven't even opened the DS version of Final Fantasy III.

I think my biggest hope is that FFIV sells enough for Square-Enix to consider a remake of FFVI. That would be beyond awesome.

I don't think that's something to worry about. They've gone through and Advanced the sprite stable. Now they're 3d-ing the same things. They'd be daft NOT to have been working on VI (even if on paper so far).

The b*tch for them is going to be finishing up with VI. Afterwards, their fans will be clamoring for the VII remake-update and they won't have any excuses left.

What they should really do is have a VI DS/VI VC simulaunch.

What I would like to know is: Where are the *new* old-school-style Final Fantasy games for the portable platforms?

The GBA and DS gave rise to great 2D sequels to NES and SNES era games that never would have been made for one of the modern standard console platforms (because everything on such platforms "must" be in 3D, by and large). We got a great new 2D Metroid game, Metroid Fusion. We got new 2D Zelda games, like Minish Cap. We even got a New Super Mario Bros.

I'm not really interested in Final Fantasy 13. But I'd be very interested in a Final Fantasy 4 1/2. Where are the new old-school Final Fantasy games?
