July 14th to 20th

If you're not into college football you might be better off watching all the E3 footage roll by than pulling out your wallet this week. Most notable is the more approachable Wii version of NCAA Football 09, possibly marking the beginning of an era of sports games everyone can play. Or a new level of waving your arms around and pressing the 'win' button.

Nothing for me this week, so I'll be downloading the Too Human demo on Xbox Live (it's out now) and submerging myself in E3 news. This may very well be the final E3 - cracked dessicated shell that it is. Like a drunk licking the floor to get the last dregs of his spilt whiskey, I suggest we all soak it in while we can.

On DVD this week we have The Bank Job, Penelope, Shutter and other stuff.

And, color me surprised the game isn't called Space Chimpz.

More importantly, does typing the words "Space Chimps" five times conjure up an ethereal apparition complete with a spacesuit and a prehensile tail?

This sounds like a flash game that Capitol One would make as an advertisement ploy around bowl season.

If it's anything like the PS3 demo, then the mascot mode is no more accessable for a casual sports fan than the normal game (read: not at all). The Wii version shows promise but I haven't heard any hands on about the family play mode.

As someone who owns a Wii, and neither a 360 or PS3, that is the pertinent one to me, and I haven't seen a hands on yet either. Reports on the earlier Maddens and FIFAs were that "easy mode" was more accessible, if boring to a non-neophyte. The whole "All Play" initiative was to make it accessible with fewer plays, more prompting, etc.

But if you are first into the shelter and then that prediction later turns out to be right then wouldn't you be first and right as opposed to being first but not right.

Seriously, how can there be enough people interested in purchasing "B.L. Stryker: the Complete Second Season?" to earn back the production costs? Other than the original cast members, who is going to buy that?

I am still playing Alone in the Dark and am still amazed by it

But what I am especially amazed by is how some sites have given it scores like 35% like IGN (though I think it's to cause a stirup)

I definitely hope you guys will discuss it in the next Conference Call.

Either I'm mad or there's something fishy in the game journalism industry.

I can understand a lot of the complaints with the game and I think they all stem from one thing: the game looks like it plays like RE4 and a First Person Shooter

but it really doesn't. it plays like a Survival Horror game. You always have this feeling of helplessness and urgency whenever a creature shows up.

I guess you either understand and accept that you're meant to feel that way, or you blame the game for it.

Some games have broader appeal than others, and it seems like no game 'scratches the itch' for everyone. For my part, I think that Dark Cloud 2 was a great game, but the rest of the world was pretty indifferent. C'est la vie.

It's really tricky to evaluate survival horror, because on the one hand, it's an established convention that you should never have quite enough bullets, but on the other hand, if a game is too hard it is a bad game. Dying and replaying the same scenes over and over again generally kills the horror part of survival horror, because you know what the monster looks like, you just can't get past him.

My only concern is whether or not the game has a bunch of Lovecraftian crap in it. That's all I need to get the old Alone in the Dark nostalgia buzz.
