June 16 - June 20

We'll be keeping it short and sweet this week. There ain't much to talk about anyway.

If you're looking to get your undies in a bunch over the creation of a retail product from materials that otherwise barely constitute a demo, then this is your week to get steamed. EA is releasing a version of the Spore Creature Creator for $9.99, turning a product we might traditionally see as a reward for something like a pre-order into a money maker. Frankly, I'm ok with monetizing these kinds of products, taking advantage of clear demand while not really penalizing traditional consumers like myself that will just wait for Spore to actually be for sale. It might be different if the final release were somehow neutered for customers who don't own the retail Creature Creator, or if there was no free alternative, but since neither of those conditions are met, then my angst-o-meter is solidly in the green. Still, I expect the internet to burn orange from the light of ten thousand flames condemning Electronic Arts for any number of lesser evils.

It seems to me like a dumb thing to buy, which is why it's not the Game of the Week even though there's almost nothing else to single out, but I'm not going to crucify EA for trying to turn a few extra bucks on the game. As for the actual GotW, that honor goes to Secret Agent Clank for the PSP.

On DVD this week, the usual suspects of television series compilations and Be Kind Rewind. More here.

I still maintain that if it were Valve or another beloved company then the whole Creature Creator issue would probably be getting praise for finding innovative ways to increase revenue and people would be buying it just to support them. Since it's EA then automatically we're looking at an evil plot to make sure your wallet and dollars spend as little time as possible together.

Other than that, I'm getting a little antsy. I've purchased most everything I care to get caught up on for the 360. Other than getting Boom Blox the general thinness of new releases is starting to have an effect on my gaming choices. I need something new and fresh and game developers seem to think I only get paid twice a year apparently.

I doubt Valve would do something like that, but if they did you may be right. But there's a reason why EA isn't a beloved company and Valve is.

I'm keeping an eye on Space Invaders Extreme. If this version it's anything along the lines of Pacman C.E., I may purchase it.

Political Machine 2008 sounds kind of interesting - although reliving the nightmarishly long primaries may be a drag, I'm curious to see how this game simulates electoral politics.

You get a rebate on the full game if you buy the creature creator so they aren't charging you for the full thing twice. Okay, they are but at least they are giving you something back for picking it up early and not just charging for a demo

Do it. It's brilliant.

PS. ... and I don't like the Original Space Invaders. This, in my mind, makes it All Good

Yup.

Space Invaders Extreme most definitely is to the original what Pac-Man: Championship Edition was to its source material. It's funny that these two retro remakes are so close to one another on their release time-line as the last remake I remember being this good was Tempest 2000 almost 15 years ago.

You can snatch up a demo of the PSP version of SIE here.

I've heard that the only rebate to be had on the full version for those that purchased the Creature Creator would be $5 and you have to purchase the full version from Target or Amazon. So, half off, but it is better than nothing for some people and they still have a demo of that with 25% of the options. I'd personally only be truly appeased if the game were being released earlier, but I've been waiting for about 4 years now so what is another 2/3 months?

Im interested in The Political Machine 2008, but I can not play games that last 4 hours, has anyone played the Beta and knows how long does a multiplayer game takes to finish?

It seems to be a so obvious question that I dont get why is not in the faq, or in the website..

Hasbro may have bought the name Avalon Hill 10 years ago but to borrow a phrase, I knew Avalon Hill. It was a friend of Mine. You sir are no Avalon Hill.

Seriously, it makes it real hard to complain about a bad day at the office.

I read a bit about it, seems to me your ship is full of Poke-men or something, RPG elements and crab fishing or something like that.

Yeah, and I have to admit I am going to check the game out. I know it is going to blow hard, but sadly, I've been keeping track of when this game was going to come out. Wouldn't it be cool if it turned out to be a gem?
