Looks like you dont need 3g to actually ride one. I'll be testing this later.

5) I need to purchase Basic Riding in order to get my Mammoths/Rhinos special abilities

If you don't plan on purchasing Basic Riding for any other purposes, I would advise you to save your money. You were meant to get these skills automatically when claiming your pre-order mount, and just as intended this will be the case once the respective bug-fix goes Live. Consequently, players whom have purchased Basic Riding already will have to do another /claim after the patch introducing these changes in order to get the respective abilities back on their Ability page; and players who aren't meant to have access to these skills (i.e. players without pre-order mounts) will find them removed from their Ability page.

My head is spinning. What does this mean? Am I going to lose 1g worth of abilites?

I am not sure.
I hit 40 and bought the riding skill and for my rhino abilities. Haven’t bought a horse yet though.

Sounds like if you had a pre-order mount and spent the 1g on basic riding, you wasted your money without knowing it as /claim was supposed to give you mammoth/rhino skills as a freebie.

It's not exactly clear, but I guess if you want skills on a regular horse you still need to buy training, but maybe you can ride the horse without training - you just don't have the extra skills (kick/charge/etc). Bit late for me to test this, but maybe with all the stunning hammer hits to my skull in Kheshatta my Demo will forget how to ride... or walk, or breath.

Of course I bought Basic Riding last night. I hope someone can explain what I spent 1g on...

Well i went on my lunch break and tried it out. I bought my horse for 2g, but didnt have the riding skill. I still couldn't use the mount. It seems that if you had a preorder mount that you could probably get away without paying for the riding skill. If you didn't you still have to buy the skill along with the horse.

The whole bit about skills seem to be that people that buy the skill get combos they're not supposed to and those will be taken away after a patch.

Yes, that is how I interpret it. Rhino and Mammoth skills should not have been part of the Basic Riding skill. Only horse skills should have been there. They will fix that, and we, who bought the Basic Riding skill, will lose the Rhino/Mammoth skills. In order to regain them, you will need to do another /claim. We had the ability to ride Rhino/Mammoth mounts at 40, regardless of the Basic Riding skill. The associated mount skills should've been there as well. To ride the regular horse mount you do need the Basic Riding skill bought.

Sorry to perform some thread necromancy but I hit L40 this morning and can give a clear answer here.

I originally claimed my preorder mounts at a low level and they sat in the bank until I hit L40. At L40 I found that I could *not* use the mount. I found this thread and destroyed the preorder mounts to do another /claim.

While receiving new mount icons/items I learned the "mount skills". Meaning, the charge and sweep abilities. I did *not* however learn the riding skill necessary to use the preorder mount in the first place.

So, bottom line is that you seem to need the basic riding skill (currently a 1g book) to use the preorder mounts.

Unless they broke it that was patently not the case before.

Perhaps, I just found the thread confusing as to whether riding was or was not required to use a preorder mount.
