June 9th to 15th

Outside my window I hear shouts and cheers from a group of teenagers leaving their dance class. I can only imagine they're expressing the same jubilation I feel knowing that Metal Gear Solid 4 is finally coming out this week. It wasn't until I broke bread with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence that I well and truly "got" the series. Like a man who discovers religion later in life, I'm new to my devotion but all the more eager to spread the gospel to make up for lost time. I've read FAQs, watched retrospective documentaries, listened to podcasts and tried in vain to convince many of you that there's more to these games than extended cutscenes and bad camera controls. Sadly, Metal Gear Solid 4 leans heavily on all that came before it, likely leaving the plot a confusing mess for newcomers. Maybe one of the extended cutscenes will fill in the backstory - but somehow I don't think that would be much of a selling point.

For fans who enjoy flogging themselves, the Limited Edition PS3 Bundle (which includes the collectors edition of the game and a special gun metal PS3) is a 40 GB unit - meaning it won't play the old Metal Gear Solid titles. All for the low, low price of $599! Putting the silly merchandising aside, we're promised that Metal Gear Solid 4 will wrap up the series with a pretty bow, giving fans the closure they deserve after suffering through Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2. Clearly, this is our game of the week.

On DVD this week we have The Beatles: Behind The Music, Boondocks: The Complete Second Season, John Adams, Jumper and lots more filler.

*sigh* I want to play Metal Gear so badly.

I'll take this opportunity to damn amazon.com to hell for that MGS4 80GB PS3 pre-order BS. I was so close to owning a non-gimped, backwards compatible PS3 with a dualshock controller and MSG4 packed in.

It's a shame Metal Gear 4 is on PS3, because otherwise I would be playing it by end of the week. I can't justify a console for ONE game. As a side note if someone needs a PS3 I am selling one.

Count me in as someone who is incredibly intrigued by the whole MGS series, but without the means to play it. Actually, I did try the first level on the PSP version and was decidedly underwhelmed, but it's by no means fair to judge a series by it's portable offshoots.
Many are the days that I regret selling my PS2.

Don't worry, Dys! You got Snood Deluxe this week!

the game I'm most excited about is Don King's Prizefighter. I have never really learned to love the Fight Night series. I'm really trying to love Round 3, but it's just not there for me, and I consider a standard boxing title a must have for whatever system I am gaming on. I love them.

I really have no expectations for how good, or how poor Prizefighter will be. I guess I am pretty leery, overall. Will be scouring for reviews before purchasing, for sure.

I don't like the MGS series at all, but that cover art is intriguing for some reason.

Maybe the reason is that they made the letter L look like the number 4?

It's probably the dearth of elderly, mustachioed protagonists in video games these days.

Agreed. Sam Fisher doesn't have a moustache.

Yet.

It's the mustache. They hold a powerful sway over the mind of gamers - I think that's why Mario's been so popular.

I can't think of a 'stacheless piece of cover art that wouldn't be improved by adding one.

I guess Certis took over handing out Game of the Week so Elysium didn't give it to My Fashion Studio for the DS.

*edit* for the record I was totally typing this out when Elysium was doing his post.

As usual, the Japanese box art is far more interesting.

And even cooler still is the European box art.

And the limited edition box is pretty cool too, but I don't think it is worth $15 more, even if you do get a making-of documentary with it.

Probably it's like Fight Night except that you can either have Don King as your manager and he takes all your money or you can go without and only fight tomato cans.

I just finished Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops last night, and I must say I really enjoyed it. It starts incredibly slow and boring, however, which made me put the game down for a very long time. I picked it back up again only because it's part of the actual Metal Gear canon (as opposed to the Metal Gear Acid games), and once I started playing and it started to give me more direction and I was opening up new areas, I really, really enjoyed it. The boss battles are all terrible, though. Especially the battles against Null.

The final sneaking mission was an exercise in ridiculous frustration, but it was pretty cool at the same time. Except for the part where if you jump down from a walkway before going into a room to grab a key, you essentially have to go through the entire level again. And there's only one way through the level. And if you fail, you have to start over from the very beginning. It took me something like an hour and a half or two hours to beat the stupid thing, but that's counting going through it twice. In that time, I got spotted by the guards like 8 or 9 times. Thankfully, HQ can't send any reinforcements. Unfortunately, when you go into alert status, all the people you originally killed respawn for some reason. Sort of makes tranqing them and then dropping them off very high ledges a waste of time.

It would've been a lot easier with a silenced lethal gun. The only silenced weapon I had was the tranq gun, which was fine until this mission. The enemy placement at times is brutal, so tranqing one guy just means the other wanders over and wakes him up before you can do anything else. If I wasn't such a huge Metal Gear fan and if I didn't know there was some important story stuff at the end, I would have probably quit right there. As it is, unlike the rest of the Metal Gear Solid series, I doubt I'll ever play through the game again.

Can't wait to have something other than Blu-Ray movies as a reason to turn on my PS3 again. It's been oh so long since Uncharted kept it on a couple days in a row and I was beginning to question my purchase, especially with the rumors of a blu-ray equipped 360 coming before Christmas.
