May 26 - May 30

This week sees the release of the semi-anticipated, briefly controversial Mass Effect for the PC. In the wake of internet outcry, perhaps only encouraging people on the internet to 'outcry' more, Bioware and Electronic Arts backed down from a planned protection scheme that would require Mass Effect to "phone home" every ten days to keep the game running. But, let's put all that unpleasantness aside and simply revel in the joy of receiving yet another console port as some kind of token offering to a meager PC market. There is some kind of unpleasant hint of an insult in playing a Bioware RPG just oozing with the trappings of a console six months after the game's release, but then again I'm the kind of person who would outcry such things on the internet. Maybe I'll start a petition of some kind. Despite this, I'm give (Note: I'm leaving my embarrassing grammatical error in tact to shame me into not being so hasty next week) MEPC the nod for Game of the Week.
Also of note is the inverse of the above situation where the PS3 receives what was one of the better, if not largely adopted, PC games of last year: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. This is a game that unfortunately got lost in the shuffle of an historic October and November of 2007 releases, and which would probably have been much more widely received any other year. This story is made a little worse for the fact that Activision has just announced the closure of the PS3 ET:QW developer.
Ours is a strangely maudlin Game of the Week segement.
On DVD this week, Rambo. Create-your-own age joke. More DVDs here.

EBGames appears to be selling Mass Effect PC for $39.99 if you pre-order from their site. Not bad.

Very nice. If you haven't played it and have a PC that meets the specs (I really have no idea what said specs are), I'd definitely recommend Mass Effect especially at that price point and with the changes they made to the PC port to fix some of the annoying facets of the 360 release.

Eh, I'll wait for the steam version of Mass Effect. All this talk of DRM kinda bothered me, and I don't want to support that.

I didn't think games released on Steam had their original DRM removed. Is that actually the case?
Stronghold Crusader holds a peculiarly large amount of nostalgia for me. I never finished either campaign trail because the missions got too darn difficult, but it was a game I re-installed several times and became equally addicted each time.
Does that mean that I should buy this new "extreme" version or not? On the one hand, new options might be great and the scenarios might be tweaked. On the other, I could hardly handle the vanilla version 60% into either campaign.

And what are the chances of Mass Effect ever coming to Steam?
The measure of a man is how truly his actions reflect his own truth - not how well his actions fall into line with what makes others comfortable.
Pre-Order and Save $10
Pre-Order Mass Effect on PC, and you'll receive a $10 instant rebate. The savings will be reflected at check out.
Hmm, interesting. I'm tempted to grab this. Worried my PC won't be able to handle it.
I read, on here, that the specs are identical to Bioshock. Not sure how true this is but if so then I should be able to run it.

ET:QW is on the 360 as well this week....anyone going for it?
I don't know, but if it doesn't I guess I'll never play it then.

I should receive it from Gamefly by next weekend. My expectations are cautiously low, but I'm hoping to be surprised.

On a completely unrelated note: i wonder how well Quake Wars will do in comparison with Shadowrun?

Depends on the price point. iD hasn't been really blowing my skirt up for some years now and I figure the game will drop like a rock before long.
Then again, last time I checked the PC version was still selling full price, so maybe they got it right. In which case I'd still need convincing it's worth full price.

Quake Wars isn't really an id game, it was made by Splash Damage. The amount of creativity and general coolness that went into the game is not something that I would expect the late id to pull off.

Is it funny or sad that is actually a selling point? "This Quake game not made by iD!"
Anyway, armed with that knowledge, indeed ET gets a point in its favor from me.

Quake Wars on Amazon for $30, if anyone is interested in the PC version.
The game's pretty team-centric. What're the odds that there are still enough players on the PC servers to make it a worthwhile purchase?

The odds are great, because there are quite a few servers up. I play this game, it's a blast. They got everything right in design and feel. It's sci-fi-delicious.
