I'm no fool. I know a movement when I see one, and the will of the community is clearly trending like an exponential curve in one direction. It all began a few months ago when our World of Warcraft forum (which we still call the MMORPG forum out of sheer stubbornness) was suddenly infiltrated by an unfamiliar population. At first I logically assumed that AoC simply stood for some upcoming Blizzard raid about which others had advanced notice, but it slowly became clear that this was not just an extension tacked onto the flowering world of Azeroth. This was a groundswell of interest in Age of Conan, an MMO that seemed to have no elves of any breed at all. Inconceivable!
Now, the unthinkable. Our World of War - erm, I mean MMORPG forum is actually populated with more threads discussing AoC than WoW. What does this mean, exactly? I hesitate to draw any long-term proclamations from such ephemeral anecdotes, but it certainly is compelling. And, such enthusiasm is not the kind against which I will resist. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is firmly my choice for Game of the Week, despite the long awaited release of Wii Fit and the far less long awaited release of Haze.
On DVD this week, National Treasure 2 and a typical truckload of television compilations. More here.

Well, Cooking Mama didn't help me become a better cook, and Trauma Center certainly didn't help me become a better surgeon. I have the proof of both sitting in my freezer. -- imbiginjapan
Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures doesn't really float the old boat here i'm afraid, seems to be the same stuff we have now grown acustomed to other MMOs and frankly I cannot see the long term interest in it at the moment.
I'll happily take Singstar and WiiFit over it any day unless you can convince me otherwise!

In typically biased Elysium fashion, Garfield: Lasagna World Tour goes completely ignored.
But seriously, the early access program of AoC has blown away my expectations of what an mmorpg can be. Combine cutting edge technology with the gifted designers at Funcom and you've got near-photo realistic landscapes, engaging combat, and interesting & mature quests. For example, a formerly wealthy socialite wants to enlist your character to help get her "escaped" slaves back. Would you help her for a reward, or tell her to shove off?
I haven't had much of a chance to pvp yet, but the die-hards seem satisfied with it. Please check the mmorpg section of this site for some nice screenshots too.

Tempting, but I'm holding out for Ziggy: Arbitrary Misfortunes.
I think I'll be checking out AoC. My wife and daughter, victimized by Nintendo marketing, demand Wii fit.

Is there a free trial for AoC? I've been burned by MMOs too many times to buy without trying.

No, not yet. It all depends on how the real launch will go tomorrow. If it's anything like the Early Access launch, I think the game will be a huge success and I wouldn't see a reason for them to open trial accounts anytime soon.

Yeah just good luck downloading the 20 gigs for it.

AoC has blown me away so far. Granted I was hooked after paying open beta even though it was filled with bugs and technical problems for me at the time. The release version is a huge improvement over the glimpse I was given via Fileplanet open beta (aka the public paid stress test).
XBL: nearly there
Fixed that for ya.

Ouch!
I think the $5 is pretty reasonable, given that it grants you 10 days of play as well. Cmon Rob, you know you want to try it...

A friend of mine is getting Wii Fit, and I'll be curious to see what he thinks. I like the basic idea, and I wonder if my wife would make use of it. She's thin, but kind of lacking much in the way of fitness. I kind of worry about her quality of life in the long term, and if this is something that would help her get active, I'd be all over it.

We're getting Wii Fit, but because I want the balance board for Wii Ski. My daughter wants to use it for it's intended purpose over the summer, too, but mostly we're going to be falling with style.

He was referring to the Open Beta which cost $8ish and was, in fact, a kick in the nuts.
The Early Access we are currently experiencing is more of a nice massage of the nuts.

Whoa now, come on. The FilePlanet open beta was for subscribers, was it not? There was no one-time charge to get the beta, was there? You can nitpick all you want, you didn't pay for it. If you bought the account solely for that purpose, it's your fault.
Playing right now, myself, and aside from the glaring mistakes that it seems every god damn developer on the face of the god damn earth makes with every god damn game, I like it a lot. There's so much potential for greatness. I hope they don't f*ck it up.

Sorry but I think you are absolutely wrong. I am sure there were lots of people who subscribed to the service just so that they could get in. It's the whole point! Fileplanet is trying to attract new customers and one of the ways they do that is to offer these exclusives. So if you were one of the unlucky few who signed up, got in the beta, and than were not even able to start the game because the open beta was monumentally mishandled you have every right to be upset! In fact I would say those people have every right to ask for their money back! Although I doubt that will ever happen.
People should not be forced to pay any sort of fee, or buy a different game, just so they can play a beta. Too much can go wrong and a lot did this time around. Not everyone who gets suckered into these deals are fully aware just how much can go wrong when they enter these agreements. It really makes me angry.

First, it's a beta, which means it may not work at all. No company is beholden to the tester to make the game work. Second, you're giving money to Fileplanet to partake in their services, which happens to include access to betas - so they don't owe you anything either.
Anyone who went out of their way to pay money for a service they didn't want in order to play a beta that may not work forfeits their right to demand their money back. They can complain about it, but demand money back? Not with any credibility.

Splitting hairs. A beta is unfinished product and comes with its own set of expectations, whether it's a week from launch or a year.

A girlfriend of mine went to reserve Wii Fit last week. The guy at the counter laughed at her optimism, saying they'd been sold out of pre-orders for over a month and a half.
I think it'll be interesting to see how much of a phenomenon this title actually becomes. Will it be the new Guitar Hero, in terms of mainstream popularity? Or will everyone forget about it in two months?

Hopefully the AoC GWJ guilds stay as active as the GWJ guild in LotRO so I can join in when the game's been out long enough to prove to be stable & solid enough to be worth a go.
Oh, wait a minute...
Ok, seriously though, looks awesome and when I eventually give it a whirl (it's a when, not an if
) I hope to join in on a goodjer-founded and goodjer-run guild city!
They'll buy it just like people bought DDR when it came to the home consoles: They think you can bounce around or do some yoga for 20 minutes a day and end up looking like Scarlet Johannsen or Hugh Jackman.
Once the experience becomes routine, or when they find out the "exercise" isn't intensive enough to counter their habits, they'll shelve it.
Maybe if they add a WiiFIt channel that has updated games and stuff, I could see it having some legs. Otherwise, we'll get complaints about inexact boards, misread activities, and so on.
I think the Open Beta phase suggests you'll have a degree of stability. My understanding of an Open Beta event is that the dev team wants data on how their 90% finished game will handle the stress of multiple users doing crazy things in a massive number. Had this been Wrath of the Lich King, the reactions would be a huge clusterfrak.
The bigger problem is that Fileplanet has been cornholing PC gamers for a few years now with their "exclusive" demos and beta tests. I used to visit FP a few times a week to find some interesting demos or games to check out. Once they started running nothing but preview clips during E3, I cooled my interest. Once almost every other thing of interest was available only to subscribers, I totally wrote them off.
It's completely dishonest of them to advertise Sneak Peeks for the subscribers and then just sit by as the people who've paid them money for an experience can't access it. At least give them something to make up for it.
"Personally I'm looking forward to buying a PC with a 128 core processor integrated with 32tb of memory in about 10 years time. Shortly there after Will Wright's Spore 3 will become self aware and annihilate humanity in a nuclear holocaust."
I completely agree with Certis on this one. I subscribed to Fileplanet just for the AoC open beta. I can't complain too much. I would spend the $8.00 that the account cost me on lunch and not feel bad about it. I got a good 5 hours of fun out of the beta, which is far more than most lunches get me. Would I have liked a more stable environment? Of course, but that doesn't mean I need to demand my money back.
Also, if you're really, really upset about it, just google Fileplanet and click on their sponsored link, that'll put 'em back a couple bucks.
