Never knew Will Smith was involved in this crap.

Here is a story all about how my brain got flipped, turned upside down...

This was originally posted on DIGG, so the page might be down due to the DIGG effect... or it might be bogus. Not sure. Here's the original DIGG post:

Apparently when your career is on the fritz, all you need to do is exorcise some Xenu to get back on track.

If only there were some way to avoid threads one didn't wish to read...

My purpose in posting this was less about directly bashing Scientology (which doesn't need my help) and more about feeling sad that another actor I like (and sometimes respect) has joined up with this baffling cult. I've found that I personally cannot support their careers or think of them the same way again after they do.

I also heard that Will Smith denied being involved with Scientology a while ago.

Don't tell me that has changed. Say it ain't so, Matt.

Wasn't his wife always an outspoken Scientologist? If I'm remembering that correctly then it was only a matter of time before either he converted, or they got divorced.

The gist of it is that he is supposedly paying for a school to be built which will use Hubbard/Scientology's teaching methods on some level. Whether he IS or ISN'T a practicing member, I don't know...

Again, I have to ask, who cares? Will Smith becoming a Scientologist is about as Earth-shattering as Ashton Kutcher becoming one.

This is annoying news. I have to admit i'm not a fan of scientology.... but then i'm not a fan of any extremism. It's just that the people who are in scientology pay-as-they-go and tend to be really rich and in positions of power which means that it's like a religion-come-secret society which i really don't like.

As an atheist, I don't think it's bigotry to dislike it when Scientology holds people captive in their own "Facilities" and denies them medical or psychological treatment until they die.

I typed this out about 5 times trying to think of an informative, respectful, and enlightening way to put this, but I really thing that "STFU" says it best.

There are a few atheists on GWJ and in general, we catch a bit of flak for it in P&C. We're occasionally made to fight the perception that atheists are smug know-it-alls who enjoy tearing down the beliefs of others. Please don't advance that stereotype, else it's a little hard for me to fault people like Switchbreak.

I'd say the fact that they charge money for enlightenment is a meaningful distinction. I mean, all places of worship require some funding in order to stay operational but they generally aren't looking to turn a huge profit.

Or actively try to keep knowledge of their beliefs and inner workings in complete secrecy.

Some of the Scientology youtube reveals are just incredible.... and 'Rev' Ron Hubbard's previous activities before founding the 'church' really are shocking....

I'm pretty much an atheist as well, and while I am certainly aware that all religions have problems, I am also objective enough to know the difference between a religion and a cult. Especially a "cult" that only switched over to calling itself a "religion" to avoid IRS payments.

But anyway... like I already said, this isn't a thread about bashing Scientology. And despite the hyperbolists, I also didn't post this thread to say "OMG!" and run around the room. I just feel a twinge of disappointment when I find out that someone I like turns out to be a member.

I don't want to hi-jack the thread any further, but IMHO there are a lot of Christian assemblies that at least ostensibly look to turn huge profits. One could say that the existence of other Christian assemblies that aren't like that makes a meaningful distinction, but in that case we'd have to start bashing a lot more indiscriminately than we tend to do.
