Playing with Magic
Hey there guys.
I'm kinda new to this place and this is my first time posting anything on the forums.
Anyways, if anyone out there is familiar with the game Magic the Gathering, I've been putting together a new deck idea and could use a few opinions on it before I click the buy button.
The card list is as follows.
4 Teneb, the Harvester
2 Orzhov Basilica
3 Pillory of the Sleepless
3 Mortify
3 Selesnya Sanctuary
4 Faith's Fetters
2 Golgari Rot Farm
2 Tatsumasa the Dragon's Fang
2 Beacon of Unrest
4 Hollow Specter
4 Kavu Titan
4 Wall of Nets
2 Grindstone
4 Millstone
5 Plains
5 Swamps
3 Forests
4 Terramorphic Expanse
Card count is 60 on the dot.
So yeah, these are the cards I've selected for this deck.
As you can see the main idea is to mill them and then harvest their graveyards.
Anyone's input on the deck is more then welcomed.

Oh, the card game. Not real magic. Never mind. *sigh

You've combined some nice stuff here but (in my humble opinion) 4 Tenebs aren't necessary especially since you can't have 2 on the board together and you've got more land here than you really need. Perhaps drop 1 Teneb and some land and put in some tutoring (eg. Diabolic Tutor or something like it.) I'll check my own collection at home for some more helpful suggestions. I seem to recall Millstone being clunky and I found a better replacement but I have to look up what I did again. Stay tuned...
Check out Lilliana Vess for some interesting tricks. She's basically got a big effect that will let you Living Death, but deny your opponents from getting any benefit from it. Kavu Titan feels a bit out of place in here and would suggest something like Wall of Roots in its place which will stop beaters and help you accelerate into bigger things. And since your goal is to chill out until you get giant stuff, you may want to think about Wrath of God and Damnation. I'm not suggesting both, merely suggesting that you may want some Wrath effects in your deck to get rid of the creatures your opponents will inevitably play.
Oh yeah, Tatsumasa probably won't do much for you either. You don't have many creatures to stick it onto and the ones you do have, well, Teneb is already a dragon if you get what I'm saying.

Well I dug my milling deck notes up again but it's not going to be too useful to you here. Wrong colour base. I stayed mostly in Ravnica block playing Black, Blue,White with the key elements being Glimpse The Unthinkable, Szadek Lord of Secrets, Circu Dimir Lobotomist, and the Dimir Doppelganger providing the offense. Ghostway protected them and the usual Fetters, Pillory, and Mortify provided the defense. It's weakness was that it was slow to start but if it got momentum was lethal.
I pretty much steer clear of constructed. I will likely be going to the Morningtide release event this weekend, however

At first I had a combo of Wall of Shards and Kavu Predator.
The idea with that one was that they gain life but the Predator gains that much power and toughnes.
But I saw way too many flaws with that idea.
They could lock down the wall or take the Predator.
I'm happy that no one has put down the idea to use Hollow Spector, I think he'll be tons of fun, he's also the reason I dropped the dragon fang in there.
I know Teneb is a 6/6 beat stick from the pits of hell, but the spector for all his borkness is just a tiny 2/2 and will draw a LOT of fire from my enimies.
That and its' kinda fun being able to put an extra dragon on the field if I feel like it.
Digger, I agree with you though that I should cut the number Tenebs down.
What I'd like to know the most right now though is, do you guys think that the millstones + grindstones is too over kill?
FOR THE MONGOLS!!!
I think it's a lot of cards for a relatively small effect. If you're going to mill, go blue; the green here is out of place. You've got some fixing with the Rav doublelands and the Expanses; I'd suggest some Lorwyn vivid lands, possibly as a replacement to the Rav lands, possibly as an addition Add some decent blue mill, lose the Xstones.
Honestly, I think you may be trying to do too much in the deck. There doesn't appear to be a plan B if you don't find a dragon (or if he gets killed), and there's not much room to stick a plan B in. The white isn't giving you anything that straight black won't, and the green isn't giving you anything at all.
I'd be tempted to go straight B/U mill with a couple of fixers (probably Expanses and Vivid lands) to drop Teneb with if you get the opportunity. Heavier black also gives you plenty of removal and some tutoring.
EDIT: Alternatively, you could drop Teneb and add in some Debtor's Knells, and some creatures with good sac effects. That would certainly be easier on the colour requirements.

Mostly I wanted to use Teneb for something.
But you have a really good point, the green isn't doing much at all.
I should drop the Kavu for something black, green's only use at the moment is getting Teneb on the field.
Also since every one keeps mentioning them, I really should put in some Tutors.
I'd have to go with Diabolic, since Demonic is WAY too expensive.
I'm trying to make a broke deck, not go broke making a deck, heh.
Inkeyes would be fun to put in there.
She has about the same effect as Teneb only she only grabs one creature and it doesn't need mana.
Plus I could ninjitsu her in for cheap after something hits.
Also, having a cold blooded killer chick on the team, really boosts moral I think.
But what to put in the last two slots?
FOR THE MONGOLS!!!
That's what I was implying but I didn't want to quash the dream of using the Teneb.
As I stated in my first reply, I found the stones to be "cute" but their slots are better filled by some blue control. The other thing to consider in the master plan here is that your whole stategy is in big trouble if your opponent is playing any kind of graveyard matters deck like Golgari or Bridge from Below or if they have Oversold Cemetary. You are dead without control. Fetters and Pillory will DELAY it, Mortify will feed it.
*cough*Debtor'sKnell*cough*

You can tell I haven't played MTG in a long time because the lands are the only cards I've ever heard of before.
Chumpy, that is a really freak'in awesome card man.
But damn, this deck's mana curve is getting a little steep.
I had a bit of a brain storm though.
I'd like to replace the dragon fangs with Whispersilk Cloaks.
Unblockable and shroud, pluss it would help that curve a bit.
Edit:
I found a way to fix the curve.
I'm dropping Beacon of Unrest for Debtor's Kneel.

/thread derail
Hey look a Magic thread, and there is Mumford, TheWalt and Chumpy.
My raging LOTRO addiction has kept me away from MTGO except when release leagues roll around.
I might have to log back on now that V3 is finally coming down the pipe.
/you may now return to your previously scheduled constructed thread.
Posting on the boards is easy. The trick is to kick someone's ass the first day, or become someone's bitch. Chiggie Von Richthofen on how to transition from lurker to poster.
It may be another month or two before they get v3 up and running, Badferret, but they are shutting down 2.5 for sure in a week or so...
It'll be good for my pocketbook... since they're not going to have leagues available for launch.

I've never tried playing the online version.
Though I'd imagine its' probably a lot more exciting then playing against the same people all the time.
FOR THE MONGOLS!!!
My observations about MTGO vs. paper
Expense - MTGO>paper
Average Player Skill - MTGO>paper
Ability to break/misinterpret rules - paper>>MTGO
Game availability - MTGO>>paper
In short, you can spend an as*load of money online, with not much to show for it. There is always a game available, which helps contribute to the as*load of expense. And the people online generally are very good at playing... it's too expensive to play much if you're not good.
The good things... always a game available, no matter where you live (so long as you have an internet connection). You learn the mechanics and rules (it's great for learning the stack).
you should be able to beta test version 3 right now, and for the 1 week transition period from 2.5 to 3, which occurs in 6-7 days from now.
Most of the GWJ folks have the same user names online as here in the forum... I can add you to the clan if you get an online account (2.5 had a 20 person limit, not sure what the clan limit is in 3.0...)

I might give it a try.
Lord knows I've been coming up dry with any MMOs that are worth playing for long.
Nothing seems to keep my interest for long online it seems.
FOR THE MONGOLS!!!
lol, the more things change, the more they stay the same. I haven't played M:TG since 2000 and there were Millstone decks around back then............
Everyone tries milling eventually.
Its' a sure fire way to screw up almost anyone's strategy.
Just about as dicky as playing controll decks.
FOR THE MONGOLS!!!
Funny, my experience is that paper costs a lot more than online. Sure, you can get boosters and it costs the same for both but online I can get ~128 commons, a dozen good uncommons, or two good-ish rares for a dollar. Paper commons cost ten cents each at the very least, uncommons usually cost me a quarter for the most unwanted out there and rares cost me anywhere from a dollar to five dollars. And don't even get me started on the pricing of multi-lands, those pain lands alone hurt my pocketbook and they aren't even that good!
The other benefit of online, if you make a lot of silly decks like I do, is that four of a card is all you ever need. Say I have four Counterspells in my possession (though WotC is getting rid of them
); if I was using paper cards I have enough for a full set in one deck. If I'm using online cards I have enough for a full set in any deck I can think up with blue.
I'll grant it's easier to drop money online as it doesn't really seem like real money, but I've had that same problem with online games via digital distribution or Microsoft/Nintendo points, so I've learned to consider my purchases in real money terms. Still, if I have sixty-five bucks to spend on Magic I'll get a lot more out of it going online than paper.
Of course I could just be going to the wrong places to get paper cards.
Remember, only by treating everyone with dignity and respect can we maintain the element of surprise for that inevitable day when we wipe our enemies from the face of the Earth.
Okay, constructed online should definitely be cheaper than paper, granted. In fact, you can save a lot of money if you just use MTGO as a medium to play casual games. I'm coming at it from a sealed event perspective, which is what my above statements were all geared towards.
On the 3.0 front, it's open Beta now, and basically you can buy whatever you want from the store to participate in drafts & sealed events. If we can get 8 people together, I'm sure we can hold our own GWJ draft contest (as was done once or twice back in the Ravnica days), but this time for $0!!
Who's with me on this? I think we have about 1.5 to 2 weeks left to do this.

Edit... well, it looks like we can't just build our on multi-player limited game, so we'd have to coordinate ourselves in the queue to get a table together...
Current draft offerings are Ravnica Block and 10th Edition...

Stupid question: I played Magic all through college, but I mostly played casual multiplayer (although I had quite the collection). Is there a multiplayer option out there, or is MTGO all dueling?

I might be interested in getting back into MTGO. It's been a couple of years and I didn't buy but a deck or two I guess. Am I screwed without spending money?

Ain't stupid if you just didn't know the answer. Yes, there is multiplayer online, mostly I'm aware of two-headed ogre (or dragon, depending on where you heard of it). One thing to keep in mind, however, is that custom rules are impossible in MTGO, so if they don't support a specific kind of multiplayer you just can't do it. This helps a lot when dealing with random people but does lessen the appeal of playing with friends (the number of cards that we've banned in our household... yeah).
For casual matches, not really. But if you only have older cards (I'm in the same boat as you there) my guess is that quite a few Extended decks will simply pwn yours, especially if you just bought some prebuilts. There's a n00b zone for beginners but my experience was that the Extended in the n00b zone was worse than the Extended anywhere else, as that's where assholes with powerful decks went to inflate their own egos. Standard is probably the best for cheap decks doing okay and just enjoying yourself, but I'm betting anything you had isn't in Standard anymore.
My way of doing it without spending too much money was to set myself a limit; one prebuilt deck from the store for my base, then ten to fifteen tickets (one dollar each, the currency of MTGO) for loose cards to tighten up the deck. That tended to get me a pretty good deck overall, but you are spending a good twenty dollars there. On the plus side so long as you remember the username/password they'll still be there years later when you've forgotten about MTGO for a while, though by then they'll be in extended too.
The other option is to sell your current cards for Tickets, but prices on that were, in my experience, generally poor. Still, it's worth looking at, especially if your cards were only from two or three sets back. And it isn't like logging on costs you anything if you have an account. You can take a look and peek on some games, see what the current standard is and judge from that.

No random free for all? No kill the guy to your right? No Emperor? I suppose you can't buy the fun cards from Arabian Nights or Legends either? *pouts*

Honestly? I have no idea. MTGO's main site would probably be better for this than I am, I just remember that two-headed ogre was the big one a year or two back.
But no, no Ariabian Nights cards. Shame too, I liked the recursive two-white card, the one that made you play another game of magic with your library. MMmmm, recursion.

Hehe I'll have to check out the site. Part of the reason I quit playing was I could not walk into a multiplayer game in Richmond without being target numero uno.
The other part was the financial part, but we won't discuss that.

When it comes to Magic, that part doesn't really need to be said aloud.

I'm pretty sure you can play Emperor; I'm not sure about chaos or kill-left/right games. And no, no Nights or Legends (yet, at least; they keep adding in old sets), but I guarantee no one misses Shaharazad...
Oh, and it's two-headed giant.
